Monoclonal Antibodies

Monoclonal antibodies are laboratory-produced substances that recognise and bind onto a specific target (such as a protein) on the surface of a cancer cell. Each monoclonal antibody only recognises one target protein, or antigen. After binding to the targeted site, the monoclonal antibody can kill the cancer cells and/or recruit the body's immune system to attack the target. Monoclonal antibodies can be used alone or in combination with chemotherapy or as a carrier of substances such as toxins or radiation.
