NHL is not a disease
When first diagnosed, many patients are told they have non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). The problem is NHL isn’t a disease, it’s a series of more than 80 subtypes.
Each subtype requires different diagnostic evaluation and treatment approaches. This ensures patients receive the right treatment at the right time for the right subtype.
Patients with lymphoma need to know the exact subtype they have. Numerous patient organisations around the world have reported that it is not made clear to many patients what subtype they have by their healthcare professional; instead, they are told they have NHL or lymphoma in general.
It is vitally important that doctors tell their patients what subtype they have and not just tell them they have NHL. Treatment depends on the subtype and without this information, patients may not be clear on what treatment they should receive.
Patients need to know their subtype to ensure they gather the correct information.
Report by Subtype
Accurate subtype reporting will lead to better understanding of the unmet needs of the patient.
Healthcare systems and government bodies around the world need more accurate subtype reporting to allow for accurate trending analysis and ensure patient needs are met.
Recording this information by combining statistics for multiple different subtypes under non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) does not adequately serve patient needs.
Stop using the category NHL and initiate systemic change for naming and listing lymphomas. Recommended subtype headings are:
- Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia (CLL)
